UBC English Language Institute

The University of British Columbia’s English Language Institute offers English study on UBC’s Vancouver campus at West Mall. Academic English or communication-focused study

English for Academic Purposes is an on-campus programme for learners who already have at least an intermediate level. It develops language for academic settings through an eight-week format. Students considering university study should check the specific progression conditions rather than assume that all English courses lead to admission.

ASPIRE emphasises communication and experiential learning, connecting classroom work with campus and city settings. EXPLORE is a five-week programme with a focus on speaking fluency and accuracy, using discussion and collaborative tasks alongside other language skills. Each programme has its own entry conditions and schedule.

Learning within the UBC environment

The institute’s building includes classrooms and a Student Study Centre. The wider campus offers libraries, museums, gardens and recreation facilities. Sociocultural activities are led by cultural assistants who are UBC students, and homestay can provide another setting for daily English practice.

When planning accommodation, allow for travel to the UBC campus rather than downtown Vancouver. Confirm the chosen programme, placement arrangements and any optional workshops. Academic courses and shorter immersion programmes have different workloads and are suited to different objectives.
