About the school
Queensland University of Technology offers English programmes through QUT College on the Kelvin Grove campus. The campus forms part of the Kelvin Grove Village precinct, about three kilometres from central Brisbane. It gives international learners a university setting for general language study or preparation for a higher education course.
Starting with General English
QUT's fifteen-week General English option uses a first-day placement test to decide which class a student should join. The published programme develops listening, speaking, reading and writing, beginning at elementary level and progressing to more advanced work. It is intended for people who need English in social situations and at work as well as prospective university students.
For someone intending to continue into academic English, the move between programmes has its own entry assessment. The college offers an on-campus testing option in Brisbane for eligible applicants without an approved test result.
Academic writing and presenting
English for Academic Purposes shifts the focus to university tasks such as structuring a report, writing an essay and delivering a presentation. Standard and extended options reflect different starting points. Applicants can compare their assessed level with the relevant QUT College or university course requirements to work out how many weeks to allow before the next stage of study.
