About the school

Osaka Minami Japanese Language School opened in 2007 in the Kire area of Hirano Ward. The school describes its main purpose as preparing international learners to continue into Japanese universities, graduate schools and vocational institutions. Its two-year preparatory curriculum gives a particularly clear view of what students work on between beginning Japanese and using it for further study.

From short exchanges to sustained explanations

At the introductory stage, students practise the language of familiar situations. Reading and writing start with kana and kanji as well as common vocabulary and sentence patterns. The aim is to understand and produce basic texts while becoming able to handle an everyday conversation. A learner who already speaks some Japanese but has done little reading may therefore need a different starting point from someone with similar conversational ability and stronger literacy.

At intermediate level, the work expands to connected texts on general topics. Students learn to explain ideas and include their own opinions in conversation. This progression is relevant to prospective university students who will eventually have to follow extended explanations and present an argument. Before applying, a student can compare their current skills with the published curriculum and ask which course length fits the intended point of entry into higher education.
