About the school
The Chinese Language Division of National Taiwan University’s Language Center offers Mandarin courses at the university’s Xinhai Road location in Taipei. Known as CLD, it provides a structured seasonal programme for international learners. This is language-centre study; participation does not itself constitute admission to an NTU degree programme.
A demanding four-skill curriculum
The regular course runs on a spring, summer, autumn and winter calendar. Weekday teaching develops listening, speaking, reading and writing, with placement based on the student’s existing proficiency. The programme uses Pinyin and traditional Chinese characters, and places explicit emphasis on handwriting.
Students should expect homework, quizzes and examinations as part of the learning process. Teaching takes place in Chinese, including at lower levels, so active participation and preparation are important. Materials vary by level and can progress from general textbooks to newspapers, selected readings and subjects connected with Taiwan.
University-based Chinese study
CLD organises language and cultural activities alongside the main course, including seasonal opportunities to explore beyond the classroom. Its Da’an location provides a base for combining focused study with everyday Mandarin practice in Taipei.
Class times are assigned according to level and the available classes rather than guaranteed solely by personal preference. Learners planning work or other commitments should account for this when applying. The centre also lists customised study arrangements for needs outside the regular seasonal structure.
