About the school

The Universidad de Chile’s Área de Español para Extranjeros teaches at the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities on the Juan Gómez Millas campus. Its teaching address is Avenida Capitán Ignacio Carrera Pinto 1025 in Ñuñoa. The programme is open to international students as well as other eligible adults spending time in Chile, including foreign residents, visiting academics and diplomats. Enrolment in a degree at the university is therefore only one way into the programme.

Spanish over an academic semester

The university describes five stages from elementary through post-intermediate study. Each stage covers a semester of sixteen weeks. Classes focus on spoken and written communication across social, academic and professional contexts. A learner who needs to present ideas in a seminar can therefore develop the language of academic participation while also working on everyday interaction in Santiago.

The programme uses diagnostic assessment to find an appropriate starting level. Applicants entering through the university’s student mobility arrangements may have different registration provisions from independent learners. Check which category applies and what the assessment will involve before selecting a group. The semester format makes this course a particularly relevant comparison for someone based in Santiago for several months and able to attend regularly in Ñuñoa.
