BROWNS English Language School Brisbane
Independent editorial listing
About the school
BROWNS teaches in central Brisbane on the eighth floor of 102 Adelaide Street. Its common room overlooks King George Square, and shared tables in the classrooms support group work. The school has a computer area, kitchen and study resources on the same campus, along with coffee-making equipment for its barista programme.
Why a learner can have several English levels
Intensive General English uses the school's Active8 system. The first part of the day places students in a core class according to their overall level. Later sessions group them according to the specific skill being taught. Someone who reads comfortably but struggles with pronunciation may therefore work at different levels in the two subjects.
This approach makes the individual learning record important. A change in the level of a particular skill can alter part of the student's timetable while allowing continuity in the core class.
Supervised work between lessons
The Accelerate component gives students time to choose independent work with guidance from teachers. The campus maintains a collection of worksheets for this purpose. A learner can revisit feedback from an earlier lesson and choose material addressing that issue. Outside study hours, an activities officer provides information about events and opportunities to explore Brisbane.
