University of Auckland English Language Academy

The University of Auckland English Language Academy, usually called ELA, is based on Symonds Street. It offers both broader English learning and academically focused routes, making it relevant to students exploring a language stay as well as applicants preparing for university study.

General English with elective study

General English develops communication through speaking, listening, reading and writing, using individual, pair and small-group work. Students are assessed before starting and placed in a morning or afternoon session according to level. The published programme provides twenty hours of tuition per week and uses fixed course dates.

At suitable levels, electives may include communication skills, business English or IELTS-related work, depending on demand. Lower-level learners concentrate on building core language foundations. The minimum published entry level is elementary, so complete beginners should confirm whether an appropriate alternative is available.

Academic English and university pathways

Academic English develops skills such as note-taking, report and essay writing, presentations and academic communication. It is distinct from the academy’s designated direct-entry pathways. Those pathways can satisfy university English requirements only when the relevant admission conditions and required grades are met.

The campus is on Level 5 at 67 Symonds Street, with a bus stop outside the building. Students should use this teaching address rather than the university’s general postal address. Comparing course type, entry level and fixed start dates is particularly important when coordinating English study with a later university intake.
